Cryolophosaurus, ("frosted crest lizard"), was one of the first carnivorous giants of the Jurassic, and at 6 m in length it is one of the biggest dinosaurs to have been found in Antarctica.

Facts

The actual position of Cryolophosaurus among the theropod family tree is slightly obscure, because it does not look quite identical to the main theropod groups. Some scientists consider it to be an early species of the carnosaurs, especially due to its skull structure, making it a cousin to such later giants as Allosaurus, Giganotosaurus and Mapusaurus but most experts prefer to classify it as a tetanuran instead, a more basic and primitive carnivore.

Cryo

Like other early theropods, Cryolophosaurus had a crest on its head, but unlike such carnivores as Dilophosaurus, whose crests goes fore-and-aft, from front to back, Cryolophosaurus had a crest that went more crossways instead, making it different from other theropods once more.
